House Painters in Wahoo, Nebraska

Saunders County voted on its seat in 1873, Wahoo won, and the county records left Ashland in the night. Wahoo kept the courthouse, the downtown, and a lot of houses built by people who meant to stay. We're still in Ashland.

A county seat builds differently than a town its size otherwise would. There’s a courthouse block, a downtown of brick storefronts with painted cornices, churches with fellowship halls behind the sanctuary, and houses put up by people who had reason to show off a little. Most of that is trim, and trim is where a coating gives out first.

Half the town was standing before 1960

The city’s comprehensive plan put about half of Wahoo’s housing at pre-1960 construction, and the largest single group at 1939 or earlier. You can see the top of that range around Linden and Beech — Queen Anne porches, cornice returns, bracketed eaves, window casings deep enough to eat an afternoon. On a house like that the paint is the small part of the job, and what’s under it decides everything. Anything below a pre-1978 coat can be lead, which is worth talking through before anyone starts sanding.

The postwar ranches that followed fail more predictably: soffit, fascia, garage doors, and the west and south walls chalking out years ahead of the shaded side. Wahoo added a few hundred houses in the late ’90s and 2000s, too. Those are reaching their second repaint now, with twenty-five years of traffic on the interiors.

Out past the last street

Wahoo Creek and its tributaries run out through open rolling ground — Sand Creek dammed a mile north of town to make Lake Wanahoo, Cottonwood off to the west toward Malmo. The acreages out there have no windbreak and nothing standing between a west wall and the weather. Tall gables, long elevations. That’s what the boom lift is for.

We don’t have a finished Wahoo job to point you at yet — our work sits in the county’s southeast corner, around Ashland. That’s where the church work is — a historic church exterior, a sanctuary repaint, a church basement — along with a pressed-tin ceiling and the interior of the Salt Creek Mercantile. The city has a downtown revitalization plan in the works, which tends to get building owners looking hard at their own facades. Nobody is based in Wahoo; the crew drives up, on our payroll rather than subcontracted, insured, and labor and materials carry a three-year warranty.
